New “Douglas County Neighbor” magazine and annual State of Douglas County event recognized nationally for excellence in government communication

Keeping you connected with the decisions and services of your county government is a priority for Douglas County. It’s vital work locally that has now earned national recognition.
The Douglas County Department of Communication & Community Engagement received two awards in September from the City-County Communications & Marketing Association during the organization’s annual Savvy Awards. The national program has honored excellence in local government communications for more than 30 years.
Douglas County received:
The Neighbor is produced fully in-house by Douglas County staff and delivered quarterly to more than 150,000 homes and businesses throughout the county. Each issue combines engaging photography and design with stories about County projects, community highlights, messages from County leadership and resources residents can use.
Judges praised the magazine’s quality, reach and cost-effective production.
“Impressive that you are able to produce such a robust publication at such a nominal cost per resident – kudos!” the judges wrote. “Great photography and layout. Amazing that this is done in-house.”
The magazine is also available online, along with past issues and an opportunity for residents to provide feedback. The next issue will be mailed to residents in October.
Douglas County’s second award recognized the 2025 State of Douglas County, a multimedia presentation highlighting accomplishments made possible through partnerships across the community. The program shared measurable progress in public safety, transportation, parks, services for vulnerable residents and efforts to secure the county’s water future.
“This dynamic multimedia presentation transforms a traditional State of the County address into an engaging story of partnership, progress and community impact,” judges said. “Through compelling visuals, clear messaging and measurable results, the project demonstrates how innovative storytelling can strengthen public understanding and showcase the power of collaboration.”
Together, the awards reflect Douglas County’s commitment to providing residents with timely, useful and engaging information while being responsible stewards of public resources.
“We have worked to build a world-class Communications team, and this award is a vindication of that strategy and the great individuals we have brought on to work for the people of Douglas County,” said Douglas County Commissioner and Board Chair George Teal.
