Turkey says SDF is not willing to talk with government

(MENAFN) Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Monday that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have shown little willingness to advance negotiations aimed at integrating with the Damascus government.

“We see that the SDF has no real intention of making significant progress in the negotiations on integration with the Damascus administration,” Fidan said during a joint news conference with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani in Damascus following their meeting.

Fidan added that the group’s behavior has become a significant obstacle to ongoing discussions, noting that some of its activities are being coordinated with Israel. “The fact that the SDF carries out some of its activities in coordination with Israel currently represents a major obstacle in the discussions being held with Damascus,” he said.

The foreign minister also highlighted that the talks covered broader bilateral issues, focusing on regional security and threats to Syria’s stability.

Fidan’s comments came during a working visit to Damascus alongside Turkish National Defense Minister Yasar Guler and intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin.

Addressing the impact of international sanctions, Fidan emphasized that Syria’s stability is crucial for Türkiye’s own security. He noted that significant progress has been made in enhancing stability and security and described the potential repeal of the US Caesar Act sanctions as a major opportunity, stating that it would facilitate investment and support Syria’s economic recovery.
