Catalan party Junts removes support for Spain’s coalition government
Junts leader Carles Puigdemont said the party would move into opposition, criticizing the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) for failing to implement political agreements. “The Spanish government will not be able to resort to the investiture majority. It will have neither the budget nor the capacity to govern,” Puigdemont said.
A consultation from Wednesday to Thursday will determine Junts’ final stance. The party, holding seven parliamentary seats, cited grievances including official EU recognition of the Catalan language, pending amnesty for Puigdemont, and rejected immigration powers for Catalonia.
Junts’ withdrawal raises questions about the stability of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s government, which relies on external support to pass legislation and maintain parliamentary backing.
